Brooklands Museum Escape Trail Ghosts in the Machine

Escape Trail Hints & Answers

If you are struggling hopefully this will help. The solutions are linked at the bottom of the page.

General Information

Each of the ghosts (4 marked different locations on the map) will give you a set of colours and numbers you can enter into the Ectovac and translate.

The sequence for each ghost is 4x colour/number pairs:

  • The number is the number of red lights at the side that you can lift the levers to.
  • The colour tells you which lever to lift.
  • When held in the correct position this will create a simple shape that you can turn into a number using the codex on the Ectovac.

You can record the colour/number sequences in your pack. Here’s an example:

Red 0
Yellow 4
Blue 4
Black 4

This would mean setting the Ectovac to look like the image below.
The shape made by the levers in this position (the red line) matches the shape for 3. Therefore, this sequence would give you the number 3.

You will need to find the four correct bookshelves to give you the four correct settings.

The books on those shelves have interesting titles, maybe they are giving you a clue to a number?

But what about the colour, maybe the shelf labels could help you out?

For example, a shelf called ‘Grass/Slime/Lime’ would mean green?

There is a picture of an ostrich and an octopus with their legs circled, aren’t there books with similar titles?

On one shelf all the titles seem to talk about reversing something, what about the name of the authors?

On one shelf the books seem to be talking about numbers of wheels, how many wheels are being referred to?

One shield has two animals and the word 'subtract'. What does Octopus minus Ostrich mean?

One shelf has lots of books and all the words in the title start with the same letters. What are those letters?

Follow the ink trails from four of the papers to the correct corresponding colours, and then work out what numbers are being referred to.

What shape is the racing track drawing, does it remind you of a number?

If that was a clock, where would the hand be pointing?

If you were to use a mirror to reflect those shapes, would it make a word?

Some letters are underlined, what would just those letters spell?

A bunch of dolls with numbers, and each one looks like it relates to a country. There are four coordinates with colours. If you can find that location on the map, then match the colour to the number on the doll you would get a sequence.

Measure longitude and latitude for the coordinates, where in the world are you?

If you find yourself off the edge of the map, maybe there is a clue to help?

Boomerangs come from Australia, Penguins live in cold places, Big Ben is in England, and fish live in the sea.

There is a note that seems to be referring to different parts of the table. Are there areas of the table you should be looking at?

The bold words on the note refer to colours, three colours on the Ectovac.

The last one - what colour is missing?

Maybe you should see if you can find anything in those locations and use your special goggles to help?

Answers

It’s more fun if you give it a go first, but if you’re really stuck don’t worry, here are the solutions for the game.

  1. Harold Hughes (Symbol: Moustache)
RED the first letter of the words in the titles of these books give you the number 4
YELLOW the titles and authors describe the number 2
BLUE: the author’s names are words for Zero written backwards. The number is 0
BLACK: Octopuses have 8 legs, minus 2 for ostrich. The number is 6
  2. Hannah Sparrow (Symbol: Fan)
RED The racing track looks like a 0
YELLOW The shapes reflected look like the word TWO, so it’s 2
BLUE: The clock hand would be pointing to 2
BLACK: The underlined letters give you 0
  3. Jean Demerera (Symbol: Doll)
    The coordinates are as following:
    RED London = Doll 2
    YELLOW Australia = Doll 4
BLUE: Off the map, Antarctica = Doll 6
BLACK: Pacific ocean = Doll 0
  4. Georgia Mule (Symbol: Goggles)
RED Hidden number by car photos 0
YELLOW Hidden number in drawer with spider 6
BLUE  Hidden number on dress 4
BLACK On back of mirror in black frame 2

Final code for the Ectovac: 4 1 7 9
