The Big Hop is the epic story of one of the greatest milestones in aviation history – the competition between four British aircraft manufacturers to be the first to build an aircraft capable of crossing the Atlantic from Canada to Europe. The engineering and human challenges of making that first transatlantic flight in 1919 – and winning the Daily Mail prize of £10,000 – saw the excruciating failure of Harry Hawker in the Sopwith Atlantic, and the extraordinary triumph of Alcock and Brown in the Vickers Vimy. Our speaker is David Rooney, author of The Big Hop, described by reviewers as "a vivid and utterly compelling account of the contest."
