CL Lecture 3

Special Livestream Event at Brooklands Museum

We are delighted to announce that Brooklands Museum has been chosen as one of the livestream venues for this year’s Christmas Lectures from the Royal Institution.

Running for 200 years, the Christmas Lectures were started by Michael Faraday to inspire and engage young people with science, and this year leading space scientist physicist, broadcaster and author, Professor Jim Al-Khalili, will tackle the awe-inspiring science of time.

Join us at Brooklands Museum for a special opportunity to watch the Christmas Lectures live as they are filmed in front of an audience at the Royal Institution’s Lecture Theatre in London, before airing on television. Featuring Jim Al-Khalili, this year’s Lectures will explore the fascinating mysteries of time, with topics linked to the secondary school curriculum. Alongside watching the Lectures on our big screen, you can enjoy hands-on activities and puzzles designed to bring the science to life. Perfect for curious minds of all ages, it promises an evening of fascinating science, discovery and family fun!

Across the two lectures, Jim will investigate a series of mind-melting questions:

  • Does time have a direction?

  • Have humans already time travelled?

  • Is the future all mapped out?

  • Did time exist before the Big Bang?

  • Does time even exist at all?

  • And why are our heads ageing faster than our feet?!

Jim will bring this amazing science to life through a series of dynamic and explosive demos. With special guests from the fields of psychology and zoology, Jim will also explore our internal body clock and how humans and other animals perceive time – and whether teenagers really do exist in a different time zone… Could fewer new experiences as we get older explain why time appears to go faster as we age? Why does time appear to slow down during an accident or dramatic event? How do our pets know that it’s dinner time? And could smaller animals be experiencing time in slow motion, compared to us humans?

Only time (and Jim) will tell…

Join us from 5pm for activities and challenges. The Sunbeam Café in our Clubhouse will be open from 4.30pm for hot food, snacks and drinks.

Each Christmas Lecture livestream begins at 6pm and is expected to finish at 8pm. There will be breaks in the livestream throughout the evening, where you can take part in the activities and puzzles again.

  1. Tuesday 8th December - What Is Time?

Jim swings from the roof of the Royal Institution’s iconic Theatre and smashes crystals as he explores the curious ways we measure time. He will test whether our brains are good timekeepers and uncover the truth that time may not actually be constant throughout the universe!

  2. Thursday 10th December - When Is Now?

Jim breaks down why the idea of “now” has wracked the brains of scientists and philosophers for thousands of years. It’s a maddening contradiction that as soon as we try to grasp the present moment it slips into the past. Jim believes it could lead us to a deeper truth buried in the universe, a hidden arrow of time pointing from the big bang to the cosmic crunch.
