Raleigh Road Racer

c1893, Racing Lock-ups, On long term display

This is similar to the one built for A A Zimmerman, an American who became World Champion and dominated track cycle racing in the 1890s. It is fitted with some of the earliest pneumatic tyres known. The front still holds air quite well. Coil springs are fitted top and bottom of the steering column. A brake does not seem to have been fitted but, at this time, the fixed wheel was often deemed sufficient.

Comparison with the 1891 Model ‘F’ Raleigh shows how every opportunity was taken to lighten the machine, eg, lighter frame tubing, lighter chain and even the mounting step at the back reduced to the minimum requirement.
