Volunteers keep history alive for future generations at Brooklands Museum

2nd Jun 2026

This Volunteers’ Week (1-7 June 2026), Brooklands Museum is celebrating the incredible contribution of its 900 volunteers - the people helping bring over a century of speed, flight and innovation to life for future generations.

From sharing supersonic stories on Concorde and of tales about legendary historic racing car drivers, to restoring vehicles, welcoming visitors and supporting events, volunteers are at the heart of the Brooklands Museum experience - helping visitors connect with history in the very place it all happened.

Based on the site of the world’s first purpose-built racetrack – a nationally important monument, and home to Concorde, Brooklands Museum is powered by a passionate volunteer community whose impact can be felt in every corner of the Weybridge site.

For many, volunteering at Brooklands Museum is about preserving specialist skills and sharing lifelong experiences and knowledge. For others, it’s an opportunity to build confidence, meet people, support wellbeing, learn new skills and become part of a welcoming community connected by a shared passion for heritage and storytelling.

Visitors regularly praise the warmth, enthusiasm and knowledge volunteers bring to Brooklands Museum - whether it’s a conversation beside an aircraft, a story from motorsport history or the welcome they receive on arrival. The experience is enhanced by the smiles given and stories they tell.

Alex Patterson, CEO of Brooklands Museum, said: “Volunteers have always been huge part of the heart and soul of Brooklands Museum, and Volunteers’ Week is an opportunity to say a huge thank you to every single person - past and present - who has given their time, energy and passion to this extraordinary place.

“Our volunteers help keep history alive for future generations. They preserve stories, skills and experiences that might otherwise be lost, while helping create memorable and meaningful experiences for visitors every single day.

“Brooklands is also a special place to volunteer because of what people gain in return - friendship, confidence, wellbeing, purpose and opportunities to learn and develop new skills while being part of a passionate and welcoming community.”

As Brooklands Museum prepares for a landmark summer - including celebrations marking 100 years since Britain’s first Grand Prix on 8 August 2026 - volunteers will continue to play an essential role in helping preserve the spirit of the people bold enough to go faster, fly higher and think differently well into the future.
