Learning and Skills

There is an urgent need in the UK to encourage young people in STEM subjects so as to meet the skills shortage.

The Museum aims to build on its amazing legacy of expertise and adventure to inspire future generations to develop these skills and shape their world.

We currently provide inspirational education activities for over 13,000 school children per year at key stages 1 to 4. This project will enable us to double the number of school children who visit us on booked educational visits, using the unique resources available in the Aircraft Factory and Flight Shed. The Museum also runs innovative programmes in partnership with further and higher education, such as the University of Surrey and Brooklands College. This project will enable us to develop these programmes further to support the engineers of the future.

As part of the delivery of the Activity Plan a Learning Officer was appointed in September 2015 to augment the Learning Team. A Teachers’ Panel and Youth Panel have been set up, together with a Science Club for 11-16 year olds and a Mini Aces Club for under 5s. Educational resources and activities are also being developed for the Aircraft Factory.
