Re-engineering Brooklands September 2016
15 September 2016
As the new Flight Shed nears completion, we now prepare for the next stage of Re-Engineering Brooklands. We apologise for the disruption on site while we are carrying out this exciting £8Million Heritage Lottery Funded Project. The project will include:
- The restoration and relocation of our WW2 Wellington Hangar, redisplaying it as the Brooklands Aircraft Factory with new interactive displays
- Construction of a new ‘Flight Shed’ to house more of our aircraft, a new Workshop and Archive Store
- The restoration of the Finishing Straight, on which the Wellington Hangar currently stands
The Wellington Hangar is now closed to visitors and in the first three weeks of September its contents were relocated. The Hangar has now been handed over to our contractors.
The Vickers Wellington is back on public view in its new pavilion near Concorde and the Vickers Vimy will be back on view soon, but some of our smaller aircraft will not be back on display until late summer 2017, when the new displays open (please see over for full details). However, our other aircraft, including Concorde and all of the airliners in the Vickers Aircraft Park, are open as usual - as are all of our motoring displays and the London Bus Museum.
Our contractors will be carefully dismantling the Hangar from October and it will be sent off site for restoration, returning later in the year to be reconstructed on its new site south of the Flight Shed.
