Christmas Sleigh Competition Results 2024
11 January 2025
Over the 2024-25 school Christmas Holidays, Brooklands Museum ran a competition called “Help Santa’s Sleigh Fly!” Participants were asked to use their creativity and imagination to invent ways to power Santa’s sleigh that didn’t use reindeer. Instead, it was suggested that some of the collection at Brooklands could be used as inspiration for their designs. Participants were asked to colour and label their designs.
We received a total of 49 entries for the competition, which were split into age groups of <5 years old, 5-7 years old, 8-11 years old, and 12+ years old. A winner and runner up was chosen for each category by our team of judges:
· John P (collections volunteer and artist inspiring this year’s Christmas trail)
· John H (aviation volunteer steward)
· Anna B (aircraft technician)
The judges were impressed by all of the artwork in the competition entries. They remarked on the imaginativeness, use of colours, and out-of-the-box thinking shown.
After some very difficult decisions, our judges have decided that the competition winners are:
· Under 5s: Oscar Judges’ comments: Great on detail, fabulous on smiles. Full of thoughtful ideas and well coloured. A lovely assortment of helpers.
· 5-7 years old: Max Judges’ comments: The box that becomes a robot reindeer is a great idea. The finished quality and practicality are well thought out.
· 8-11 years old: Ivy Judges’ comments: The complete solution. Well labelled. A great combination of ways to power the sleigh.
Winners were awarded toy racing cars or trains – vehicles that could be used to pull Santa’s sleigh! No prize was awarded for the 12+ age category as there were no completed entries in this category.
Comments about runners up:
· Emily (Under 5s) – making it a candy cane aeroplane was appropriate, yummy and a nice idea. Good colours. The best way to fly at Christmas
· Cedric (5-7) - appears to be a budding cartoonist. I liked his idea
· Owen (5-7) – a very high-quality entry
· Joseph (5-7) – Just super-sonic
· Hollie (8-11) – Considerate about Santa’s safety, and an amusing design. Well labelled.
· Mia (8-11) – design made me laugh. Gave some very good speed and direction.
· Bastian (8-11) – a good idea and well coloured in.
