Brooklands Great War 100

Sunday, August 3, 2014

Brooklands Museum - EventsJoin us as we mark the centenary of the start of World War One, with a special event encompassing the many aspects of Brooklands’ involvement in the Great War of 1914 – 1918.

For this special event we will be gathering automobiles, motorcycles, bicycles, commercial vehicles, buses and aircraft from the period up to 1919.

In the paddock there will be a display of the vehicles taking part in the Great War Centenary Parade in London on the 4th August. At lunchtime these pre-war vehicles will be taking part in a Cavalcade round the Mercedes-Benz World circuit.

Overhead will be a stunning air show from the Great War Display Team who will be flying their replicas of a Sopwith Triplane, a BE2 and an SE5.

On the ground our own aircraft will be making a grand entrance too, with engine runs of our Sopwith Camel. Our Vickers Vimy will be on display outside the Wellington Hangar and our SE5a will be in the Outer Paddock with the Hucks Starter from Shuttleworth.

A new book, W O Bentley Rotary Aero Engines by Dr Tom Dine, published by the W O Bentley Memorial Foundation and which is to be launched on the 4th August, will be on sale in the Paddock and there will be displays from Kingston Aviation Trust and on Exploring Surrey’s Past by Surrey History Centre. In the Clubhouse there will be period film shows.

Over in the Press Hut Brooklands Museum need trainee pilots to help the war effort: we have a fleet of biplanes that need to be built, will you be able to help us? This family craft activity will be running in the Press Hut from 10.00 - 17.00.  As we commemorate the anniversary of World War One we are inviting young people to find out more about the site during the war with our new trail. Explore the collections and find out more about the brave men and women who did their bit for the war effort.
