Napier Railton facts
The Brooklands Outer Circuit lap record of 143mph taken in 1935 by the Napier Railton was never beaten.

The car is now on display in the Speed Record Exhibition in the Motoring Village at Brooklands Museum.

Discovery at Brooklands

This is our interactive gallery that makes learning about science fun. Visitors can, amongst other things, power a train by hand, build a bridge to stand on and experiment with light and sound.

Discovery@Brooklands is open to families and other visitors when not being used by schools. Opening times are 11am until 4pm every day.

Fun and education rolled into one for kidsTeachers will be pleased to know that while their pupils are enjoying the exhibits in Discovery@Brooklands, they are also reinforcing National Curriculum Science Key Stage 1 and 2 topics such as light, sound, power and structures. Schools booking visits to Brooklands Museum can include a session in Discovery at no extra charge.

Volunteer opportunities in Discovery

We are always on the look out for Volunteer Explainers in Discovery – these are stewards who help visitors to interact with the exhibits and understand the scientific concepts behind them. For young people, time in Discovery can count towards the Service Section of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.

The exhibits experience a large amount of wear and tear from visitors and as a result need regular maintenance. Most of this is done by Volunteers and varies from repainting and fitting electric motors to changing bulbs.

Anyone interested in becoming an Explainer or helping with maintenance in Discovery, please contact Valerie Mills at education@brooklandsmuseum.com.
